ChristmasOS
a CalmNCalculated OS

Gifts

Everyone you're giving to, every idea, and where each gift stands — Idea, Bought, Wrapped, Given. Prices flow to the Budget by themselves.

Budget

One season budget, six envelopes, live totals. Gift spending fills in automatically from your gift list — everything else takes a quick entry.

Planner

The season, week by week — from "Now — before the rush" down to Christmas week. Check things off and the countdown takes care of the rest.

Menus

Every meal you're hosting — dishes, who's bringing what, and one consolidated shopping list across all of it.

Cards

Your send list — who gets a card, whether it's gone out, what's come back, and which thank-yous are still owed.

Memories

Your traditions, this year's moments, and the archive of every Christmas you've run from here.

Help & guide

Every gift, every dollar, every moment — one calm place for the whole season.

What ChristmasOS is

A private, offline Christmas HQ — one file that lives on your computer, no account and no cloud. Add everyone you're buying for, track every gift from idea to given, set a season budget across six envelopes, plan the weeks down to Christmas, run your hosting menus, keep the card list, and log the traditions and moments worth remembering. Nothing is ever sent anywhere.

The whole app is built around one arc: the countdown to December 25. The Dashboard leads with a live days-to-go badge and a gift pipeline that fills up from Idea through Given as the season moves.

Setup — under a minute

Your purchase is three files: the ChristmasOS.html app, The Calm Christmas companion book, and a Quick Start PDF. Nothing to install — double-click ChristmasOS.html and it opens in your browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox). No unzipping, no login. It works fully offline once loaded, on Mac or Windows.

First time in, you'll see three choices: ✨ Explore with sample data loads a full example season (the Harper household's Christmas) so every screen is populated. Start fresh skips the demo and starts your own season. ⬆ Restore from backup file loads a backup straight in if you're moving computers. While exploring the demo, a banner up top offers Start fresh with my own, which clears the sample data.

The 7 sections

Dashboard — the countdown badge, the gift pipeline (Idea → Bought → Wrapped → Given, each with its own count), a budget ring, per-person mini budget bars, this week's tasks from the Planner, snapshot tiles, and a tradition prompt.

Gifts+ Add person for everyone you're buying for (name, group tag, gift budget), then + Add gift for each gift: who it's for, estimate, actual price, and status. Once a gift is Bought, Wrapped or Given, its actual price counts toward the Gifts budget automatically — this total is derived, never entered twice. Tick Surprise on a gift to hide its name on screen ("🙈 Hidden gift — tap to peek") until you tap to reveal it — handy if curious eyes wander. Search, filter by person/status/group, and select multiple gifts for a bulk status move or delete.

Budget — one season total split across six envelopes (Gifts, Food & drink, Decor, Travel, Wrapping & cards, Other). The Gifts envelope fills in by itself from your gift list; + Add expense logs anything else — groceries, lights, stamps.

Planner — a week-by-week checklist from "Now — before the rush" down through Christmas week. The bucket matching where you are right now is marked "this week." + Add task for your own; check things off as you go.

Menus+ Add event for each meal you're hosting, then + Add dish inside it — leave "Who's bringing it" blank if it's on you. The shopping list at the bottom consolidates everything still to buy across every event; dishes a guest is bringing are excluded from it automatically.

Cards+ Add household to build your send list, then tick off Sent, Received and Thank-you per household as the season goes.

Memories+ Add tradition for recurring rituals (they surface as Dashboard prompts), + Add moment for this year's highlights, and the Year archive — see Start next year below.

Start next year

When the season's over, Settings → 🎁 Start next year (or the start next year → link on the Memories tab) closes it out in three steps, always in order: (1) a backup downloads automatically before anything else happens; (2) the season is archived permanently into Memories — every gift, price, envelope, menu and moment; (3) next year is set up — your people, budgets, groups, traditions and card list carry over, menus carry over with next year's dates and every dish unticked, while gifts, card ticks and this year's moments clear and the Planner re-seeds fresh.

This is not the same as Settings → Reset, which erases everything. Start next year files the season away; Reset deletes it.

FAQ

Is my data private? Yes — everything stays in your browser on your device, no cloud, no account, nothing ever sent anywhere. Does it work offline? Yes, fully, once the page has loaded once. How do I back up or move devices? Settings ⚙ → ⬇ Export backup saves a small file; on the new device, Settings → ⬆ Import restores it (Import replaces everything — it never merges). Will marking a gift Bought update my budget? Yes, automatically. Can I add unlimited people, gifts or dishes? Yes, no caps anywhere. What currencies? $ £ € ₹ A$ C$, set in Settings. Are updates free? Yes — re-download ChristmasOS anytime from your Etsy purchases page.

Troubleshooting

Data not saving, or looks like it disappeared? ChristmasOS saves to your browser's local storage, which private/incognito windows wipe on close — open it in a normal window, and use the same browser each time (each browser keeps its own storage). If storage is full, export a backup from Settings and clear some space. Moving to a new computer? Export a backup on the old machine, copy ChristmasOS.html and the backup file to the new one, open the app, and Import. Starting over? Settings → Reset erases everything — export a backup first if unsure, it can't be undone. Want a paper copy? Settings → 🖨 Print hides the navigation automatically so only your gift list and budget summary print.
